Pretty much guaranteed I would chime in on this one
A stock FZ-1 lacks in the power department. I was very disappointed in my bike when I first rode it home. The boys at the FZ1 board know their stuff though and I put faith in what other owners discovered. Not since the '86 GSXR 1100 have I been around a bike that wakes up like this thing does to simple air/fuel in and out mods.
The airbox is restricted, (cut the snorkle out) and the secondary butterflies are computer conrolled party poopers (take 'em out). Add a slip on and a properly mapped PCIII and hold on. Dyno charts over on the FZ board show an FZ with these simple mods closely matching a stock ZX10 all the way to 10,000 rpm and actually out powering it by a few ponies at 4,000 rpm. The ZX then leaves it behind to the tune of 15 hp after 10,000, which is were the FZ cams/breathing seem to give out, but hey, we are talking a ZX10 here The FZ has milder cams than the 04-06 R1, and I think it makes a far better street motor. It has some midrange beef when it is allowed to breathe.
Here is my post mod dyno chart. Bear in mind this run was done at 5,300 feet and as you can see, it was slightly rich on the A/F curve after 8,500 rpm. I tweaked the map afterward to take a little fuel out. Stock vs. modded is like night and day, even here in thin air land, it runs like a raped ape.

What the WOT dyno chart does not show is the throttle response. It went from numb to raw, edgy and sharp. Twitch the throttle and it torques on the rear tire. The thing is a rabid animal now and I love it. I can't imagine how stupid it would be at sea level. It is probably better I live in the mile high city
As for your other observations, I gave my brakes the usual 140 mph break in procedure. After a few hard pull downs, they became much better. The windshield/fairing works well for me and leaves my helmet in clean air. If I was shorter, (I'm 6') I suppose it would definitely slap my head around bit.
My only rear ergo complaint was too tight a seat/footpeg distance for my 33" inseam. I got a pair of Lockhart V360 adjustable jobs and put them in the down and back position. My knees thanked me.
Ironically, it is a piece of cake to get the same 150 hp out of a 1st Gen FZ-1. Mod the airbox, rejet the carbs, put a system on it and it you are there. Those old bikes are strong runners. They still are sleds in the chassis dept. compared to the new model though.
